Lugano is the cultural center of Italian Switzerland, thanks also to the presence of the LAC – Lugano Arte e Cultura with theater, concert hall and lakeside museum of the city that opened its doors to the public in September 2015. Above all LAC is nowadays famous in Switzerland and Italy for the importance of its events.

Thanks to the Lugano-Mendrisio-Varese-Gallarate-Malpensa rail link it will also be easier to reach the international airport of Milan Malpensa. The Lugano railway station is the main stop on the Italian part of Switzerland for long-distance trains that from 2016 take advantage of the new transalpine railway and the longest railway tunnel in the world (Alptransit project), which allow to reach Zurich in just 1h50.

History

In the Middle Ages Carona constituted a sort of castle zone, whose lands belonged to the diocese of Como until in 1472 it became an independent parish. His loyalty to the Visconti, dukes of Milan, yielded privileges and tax exemptions to the small village until beyond the medieval era. A dense network of mule tracks connected the Carona district to Lake Lugano in several places. However, at the end of the 19th century a road was built to facilitate connections with the center of Lugano
