La Via Verde (or Greenway): a pleasant walk from Moltrasio to Laglio.
The Via Verde is a pleasant walk of about 7.5 km connecting Moltrasio to Laglio.
It is undoubtedly less famous than the Green Way, a walk that, through a path of about 10 km, connects the villages of Colonno, Sala Comacina, Ossuccio, Lenno, Mezzegra, Tremezzo and Griante, following the ancient Via Regina.
Our Via Verde, which lasts about an hour and a half, leaves from the Moltrasio pier to reach the village of Laglio, admiring some of the most beautiful views of Lake Como. The first section is difficult, as it is necessary to follow an uphill mule track, the a.k.a. “Scala Santa” (so called because it was used during the religious processions), which along the neighboring wall of Villa Passalacqua, reaches the parish church of Moltrasio. From here following Via Curiè, Piazza Umberto I, via Bianchi, passing to the right of the stream, and entering a small valley that passes under the viaduct of the state road and flanks the mountain wall with the ancient quarries of Moltrasio stone, pride of Comacini masters.
At Villa Memy, keep your right hand until you reach the hamlet of Tosnacco.
From here it starts the so-called Via Verde, indicated with green circles on the road, which develops on the mountain half way up the road, passing through the cemetery of Urio, the bridge over the river Fesnàa, reaching the hamlet of Cavadino.
In this hamlet, a detour allows you to reach the Sanctuary of the SS. Trinità di Pobiano, a small rectangular church surrounded by green fields and surrounded by woods, with a magnificent view of the lake.
The sanctuary was defined in 1932 by Bishop Alessandro Macchi “a strip of Heaven on the earth”.
The legend tells how the inhabitants of Cavadino, at the time of the plague of 1630, rediscovered in this place the remains of an ancient chapel with a fourteenth-century painting depicting the Trinity.
To save the sacred image from the ruins, they would have transported it to the church of the hamlet, but during that same night the wall with the fresco would have returned to Pobiano by divine intervention.
On the other hand, you reach the Santa Marta complex, a Romanesque church, a seventeenth-century plague column and a graveyard with neo-gothic tombs, located above the Regina road, on magnificent cliffs planted with olive trees.
Going down the steps of the Via Santa Marta, along which there are eighteenth century aedicules of the Via Crucis, underpass the state road and crossing a road takes a pedestrian, which passes through the narrow and characteristic alleys of Carate.
Later we passe nearby the well-known 17th century Castle, now home to an International Center that carries out cultural, scientific and religious activities inspired by the message of St. Josemarìa Escrivà, founder of Opus Dei.
We continue through narrow streets halfway up the hill and then we descend to the lake in the village of Laglio, also known for Villa Oleandra, owned by famous american actor George Clooney.
The lakefront offers tranquil panoramic resting places, such as Piazza Riva Silvio and Piazza Barchetta, where the parish church and the Oratorio dei Confratelli, richly frescoed, are located.
From Laglio you can resume the journey backwards, or reach Moltrasio or Como by boat or by bus.
The itinerary can be enriched starting from Rovenna and using the c.d. Sentee di Sort, which passes through the ancient Moltrasina stone quarries.
